Spiders are one of the most common – and most feared – invasive pests around. Loose screens, cracks under windows or doors, and other openings are all easy entry points for spiders. They often move inside houses in search of food, a mate, warmth, or moisture. Spiders love eating insects, so their presence in a house will often bring spiders along as well.
Are Spiders a Serious Threat?
Most spiders are almost completely harmless to humans, but some species can inflict venomous bites that can pose a health risk. The two most common venomous spiders in the United States are the brown recluse which is distinguishable by a violin-shaped mark on the top of its thorax, and the black widow which is easily recognizable by the red hourglass shape on the bottom of its black abdomen.
Some spiders like living in moist environments and are often found in basements, crawl spaces, and other damp areas of buildings. Other species like warm and dry areas like air vents, the upper corners of rooms, and attics. All spiders prefer to hide out in dark areas.
There are tens of thousands of spider species in the world, and all of these arachnids have eight legs and two body segments. Spiders have either three or four pairs of eyes, though their vision tends to be quite poor – with a few exceptions.
Spiders mostly feed on insects, but will eat other forms of prey they are able to overpower. They do not have mouths that allow them to chew, so they rely on enzymes in their saliva to break down their prey before consuming it.
