Apart from seeing the animal with your own eyes, it can be difficult to
determine if you have a
squirrel problem in your home or attic. Below are some of the top five signs that indicate
you might have a squirrel infestation.
Sign #1 – Point of Entry
Squirrels like attics, so look for holes and other points of entry on your
roof, near your drainpipes, or your chimney. If you notice a hole or an
opening that a squirrel could fit through, then you may have a squirrel problem.
Sign #2 – Scampering Sounds
Squirrels are active creatures that move about both day and night. If you
have noticed scratching or scampering noises coming from your ceiling,
there is a chance you may have a squirrel infestation.
Sign #3 – Structural Damage
Like mice and rats, squirrels can cause substantial structural damage to
your attic. Check your attic for things like exposed wires, chewed vents,
or damaged insulation. Even if you do not see a squirrel in your attic,
these problems should be addressed as soon as possible to prevent further
damage like attic electrical fires.
Sign #4 – Droppings
Another telltale sign that you may have squirrels in your attic is droppings.
To the untrained eye, it can be difficult to distinguish mice and rat
droppings from squirrel droppings. We recommend calling in Critter Control
for an assessment.
Sign #5 – Odor
You may or may not have seen the droppings, but if there are squirrels
in your attic, you may have noticed a foul smell. Both squirrel urine
and feces can create a pungent smell that seeps into the walls of your
home. If you notice a foul odor, especially in conjunction with one or
more of the aforementioned signs, we recommend calling Critter Control.
